Evangelism at the United vs Ajax Match 2017/18

Ajax Cape TownMaritzburg UnitedWith the 2017/18 Premier Soccer League kicking off last weekend it was good to be out in our Lord’s harvest field once again at the local football stadium being the Harry Gwala Stadium (the former Jan Smuts Stadium).

This praise report is solely for GOD’s glory alone and  that no attention be directed our-way! “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). On the evening of Wednesday 23rd August 2017, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town.

A call for repentance Whilst handing out tracts someone made mention of the inscription on the wooden cross: “Are You Ready”? This opened the door to presenting the Gospel. A secular analogy was used to begin with. It went along these lines:

Consider you come to this football match on 23rd August 2017 at the Harry Gwala Stadium, but you have a ticket for another match to gain entrance to the FNB Stadium, you will not gain entrance to the Harry Gwala Stadium because you have an incorrect ticket. The ticket you possess is to gain entrance to another stadium at another destination. You need the correct ticket to gain entrance to this stadium at this destination. Now the same principle applies in the spiritual realm. People are going through life with many religious tickets hoping to gain entrance into the Kingdom of GOD,Raising the Name of Christ Jesus or as they put it “some better place”,  but they have the wrong ticket which is leading them to a wrong destination. You need to have the right “ticket”, so-to-speak, to gain entrance into the Kingdom of GOD which is Heaven. If you have the wrong ticket the only entrance access you will gain is into Hell – which is the wrong destination. The “ticket” you need is to be born-again through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. If you do not have Jesus, you do not have the correct entrance access to the right destination! The devil Satan is a deceiver who sells fraudulent tickets to people who are deceived for the lustful pleasures of this life. They pursue and obtain the wrong tickets that lead to the wrong destination, whilst we evangelists come out here to warn you of your pending destruction through deception. We are pointing you to Jesus Christ, the saviour of the world.

Psalm 34:8  O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

We also alerted the fans that whilst There are two ways in lifethey were coming out for some entertainment, there is no guarantees that they would go home. We mentioned the death of two spectators outside the FNB Stadium leading up to the Carling Black Label Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates that took place on Saturday 29th July 2017. It is alleged that the deaths were caused due to a stampede that took place at Gate-J and that fake tickets were being sold. [The article Two killed at FNB Stadium can be read Here.] We also mentioned previous tragedies that took place at football grounds and other tragic accidents [read GAME OVER ~ A Real Tragedy ~]. A mention was also made of the late Mondli Cele (26) who played for Maritzburg United and scored the opening goal in a 3-3 draw against Orlando Pirates on the evening of Saturday 16th January 2016 and lost his life at around 5am the next morning 17th January 2016 when his car crashed into the Msunduzi River in Park Drive, Alexandra Park, just down the road from the Harry Gwala Stadium. These events transitioned into the Gospel of mercy and grace that can save wretched sinners! And as the evening progressed leading to kick-off time there were some heckling, mocking, and reasoning. Praise GOD! Much Gospel literature was distributed as the crowds started increasing.

In closing, we request that you kindly keep us in prayer for our next PSL football outreach, Lord willing, at the Harry Gwala Stadium’s South Gate, which should take place on the evening of Friday 15th September, 2017 from about 17:30 – 20:00

2017 PADSA Easter Soccer Tournament

We give thanks to GOD our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ for allowing us to be of service to HIM at the Easter Soccer Tournament at the Northdale Stadium as in 2016.

This year we attended on Saturday 15th and Monday 17th April 2017 where many Gospel tracts were handed out and Christ Jesus the Saviour of the world was proclaimed.

PIC000 PIC001 PIC002 PIC003 PIC004 PIC005 We met and spoke to current Pirates’ coaches and past MDFA Pirates players such as Stevie Ruiters and even a referee stopped by to chat. Also recognised by some spectators from yesteryear who also received Gospel literature.

Whilst we did have no problems with the distribution of Christian literature and speaking to players and spectators, an official organiser (?) did try to move us from our position claiming we were obstructing the thoroughfare between the main field and the top outer fields, when clearly crowd support was down on past years and there was not much foot traffic passing that way at that time! He indicated towards a place that was muddy and unclean. We however did move the ‘Are You Ready’ cross and Gospel tract holders in the opposite direction up against a pillar which had more visibility for the time we were there! Praise be to GOD alone!

2016/17 PSL Season 

Cape Town CityThe PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Cape Town City that was to take place on Friday evening the 28th April 2017 at the Harry Gwala Stadium was rescheduled to take place on the following Monday afternoon the 1st May 2017 at 15:00 at the same venue.

Early on with our neighbours at the Maritzburg United vs. Cape Town City match Gary invited some of our neighbours to the football match and handed out Gospel literature after the game. It was really encouraging when the youngsters eagerly jumped in and asked if they could hand out some tracts coming back for more tracts each time until the tracts were finished and klaar!

We were unable to attend the Maritzburg United home fixtures on Wednesday 10th May 2017 against Platinum Stars and the last fixture of the season on Saturday 27th May 2017 against Bloemfontein Celtic. However, GOD willing, we do look forward to being out in the LORD’s harvest field at the PSL 2017/18 football matches for HIS glory proclaiming the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On Saturday 6th May, 2017, Pirates FC played in the MDFA 5-a-side tournament at the Collegians Club in Pietermaritzburg. The Under 10s again finished Runners-Up to Soccer Kids Academy in the Final that went to extra-time losing 0-1 after having beaten the same side 1-0 in the round-robin League stage.

The PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Baroka F.C. that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium on the evening of Friday 14th April 2017 had its kick-off time brought forward from 20:00 to 17:00 as the fixture was on the ‘Good Friday’ holiday. Besides not knowing of the change in kick-off time Jono and Gary cancelled the outreach due to the heavy thundershowers the entire afternoon.

PMB Pirates Football Club News

On another note, Gary is an assistant coach at PMB Pirates FC in the amateur Under 10/11 age group. As part of his evangelism ministry he has prayed for GOD to open a door for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to go through and be made known to players, parents, coaches and club staff. We endeavour to train the children holistically with the objective of having healthy minds, bodies and souls, and by keeping them off the streets in their communities, keeping the children active in football as they apply their GOD-given talents and skills. May our LORD use His servants on match days to reach many who are of other faiths and religions, where many of our football opponents are Roman Catholics, Muslims and Hindus.

On Saturday 8th April, 2017, Pirates FC hosted a 5-a-side tournament in Woodlands in celebration of their 120th anniversary (1897-2017). A full day of football was ended off with a prize-giving and some Gospel tract distribution.

Ajax Cape Town This praise report is solely for GOD’s glory alone and that no attention be directed our-way! “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). On the evening of Saturday 1st April 2017, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

This was our first time to preach in the vicinity of the North Gate to the stadium as opposed to the South Gate, which was our previously advertised ‘fishing’ area. We immediately, after committing the outreach to our Lord GOD in prayer, engaged a car-guard in conversation. He is a Shembe Nazareth believer who follows after their prophet Isaiah Shembe. We made it clear from the beginning that this man – later to learn that his second name is Immanuel – was in violation of the Ten Commandments to which they staunchly hold to. Firstly, he was smoking at the time and if I am not mistaken there appeared to be the smell of alcohol on his breath – two vices Shembe Nazarenes are forbidden to partake in. Secondly, we brought to his attention that as they hold to the Sabbath day (Saturday) whilst he was working they are not to work. The conversation revolved around him trusting in a prophet – a false prophet – who is seen as the ‘messiah’ of the black African man whilst they see the Lord Jesus Christ only as the Messiah of the white man. Straight up their religion is based along racial lines. Shembe believers are deceived of the devil following after a man-centred-religion that has so many factions due to their continuous court case battles as to who owns the ‘church’. Then they are divided not recognising the other factions as ‘true Shembe churches.’ He told us he needed to leave after we told him that if he does not have the Lord Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour Who can bring him out of darkness into the light, he is therefore not a child of GOD, but a child of the devil. That statement appeared to rock his world as he walked down the road away from the stadium. We did pray for him as he went down the road.

Later, we also had some conversations with drunk Roman Catholic men – one young African man even had an Afrikaans name Andries. Much literature was handed to them for closer examination especially when Andries tried to make our Lord Jesus Christ into a ‘holy bartender’ when He made water into wine at the wedding in Cana (see John 2:1-11). Wicked men who lust for drunkenness will always try twisting Scripture to fit with their own world view. The wine they were drinking was not the fermented poison of today, for our Lord Jesus would have contravened His own Word where we read,

15  Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! ~ Habakkuk 2:15

1  Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. ~ Proverb 20:1 

9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 
10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 
11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. ~ I Corinthians 6:9-11 (my emphasis) 

Our third encounter with spectators took place when Gary started to preach to a group of persons doing some ‘exercise’ on some public equipment outside the stadium leading up to the North Gate. Whilst a man and a woman left the area and the man was making some comments against the preaching, three men listened for a while then came over and stood in front of the ‘Are You Ready’ cross and said that they want to hear more. These three males – the one who we addressed most was Ally from Tanzania – and they were Muslims. They listened intently and interacted as we went through the Law of GOD given to the prophet Moses. We dealt with the differences between the ‘prophet’ Mohammed and our Lord Jesus Christ also addressing their religion of so-called peace and the true Prince of Peace Jesus. However, as the conversation was progressing, one of the three started pulling another away indicating that they must go, just before we were about to share why they have to be born again through the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ally and the other two had taken Scripture tracts and Ally intimated that he would contact us. Well we trust if he does, so-be-it. If not, he heard sufficiently and has material to contemplate.

The time leading up to kick-off we handed out much literature to groups of fans as they made their way to the stadium’s entrance. Kindly pray with us that those lost in their sin who received GOD’s Word will cry out to GOD for mercy and grace and be saved.

Evangelism at the United vs Chiefs Match 2016/17

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

Kaizer Chiefs This belated praise report is solely for GOD’s glory alone and that no attention be directed our-way! “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). On the evening of Saturday 11th February 2017, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Kaizer Chiefs, the Amakhozi, that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Prior to the evening preaching which was limited to Gospel tract distribution as a severe thunderstorm was brewing, we had been in Church Street in the Pietermaritzburg CBD during the afternoon putting the sound system through its paces with the preaching of the Gospel of GOD. Much literature was also given out then. Later in the evening, as fore-stated whilst the thunderstorm brewed and lightening was all about and the wind picked up, it appeared many spectators had not made preparation and had come unprepared for the heavy downpour that would follow. The simple message that was given out with the literature is that eternity is approaching each and every person and yet no preparation is given “to meet thy God” as we are reminded in Scripture,

11  I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
12  Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
13  For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name. ~ Amos 4:11-13

Evangelism at the United vs Pirates Match, 2016/17

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

On Tuesday 13th December 2016, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium. We arrived after 17H30.

Gary sharing the Gospel with some youngsters The crowds arrivingOrlando Pirates supporters Gary preachingA crowd gathered for the preaching of The Word The next week, Gary was away in Bethlehem in the Eastern Free State when ‘The Clever BoysBidvest Wits Bidvest Wits came to Pietermaritzburg and therefore could not preach at the match that took place on Tuesday 20th December 2016. However, he has been doing Gospel tract distribution in Bethlehem and has had some wonderful conversations with African car-guards and shopping-mall staff. Tract distribution at the Dihlabeng Mall entrance Tried to proclaim the Gospel of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ to an African man, who could have been a Rastafarian, helping a Hindu woman sell Hinduism idolatrise books and literature in the Dihlabeng Mall. The acoustics were good, but they were not interested, she calling him away from Gary. However, others heard too. For, it is written,

6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. ~ John 14:6

28  Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
29  Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. ~ Colossians 1;28,29

With regards to our further football evangelism, the South African Premier Soccer League is taking a mid-summer’s break that includes the month of January 2017 which is when the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations tournament takes place in Gabon from 14th January to 5th February 2017. Therefore, kindly keep us in prayer for our next PSL football outreach, Lord willing, at the Harry Gwala Stadium’s South Gate, being on Saturday evening 11th February, 2017 from 17:00 – 20:15

Evangelism at the United vs Chippa Match, 2016/17

On Tuesday 29th November 2016, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Chippa United that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium. We arrived after 17H30.

A new sound system for the ministry All praise and thanksgiving be to YEHOVAH our Creator GOD Who blessed us with a sound system that pumped out the clarion call of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ! No doubt, many heard the call to repentance and the way of salvation far and wide. On a cool sprinkling (mist) rain evening the Gospel was declared and many Gospel tracts were handed out, both in the isiZulu and English languages. Some were taken and then discarded on the ground. In this sinful generation,

18  There is no fear of God before their eyes. ~ Romans 3:18

Whilst unrepentant sinners do not fear GOD, we remind them what our Lord Jesus Christ said concerning Who one A clarion call to repentanceshould fear, not those who can only kill the body,

5  But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. ~ Luke 12:5

Salvation is of GOD and unless He draws them they will never understand,

10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. ~ Proverb 9:10 

Our prayers are that GOD will show mercy and save wretched souls for His glory, as we read,

44  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. ~ John 6:44

65  And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. ~ John 6:65

Jono speaking in isiZulu Jono speaking in isiZulu We were pleasantly surprised that a young African youth came to our assistance and helped us by regulating the sound for us at the outset. We were also encouraged by ‘others’ thanking us for the preaching. All glory to GOD!

Proclaiming Christ Jesus We have also noticed that a lot of alcohol is being publically consumed before matches and some spectators are already ‘drunk as a skunk’ by the time they enter the stadium. Surely they cannot enjoy the game in that condition? I can speak from ‘experience’ as I too once walked in their shoes in my wretched past – But by the grace of GOD! There is hope, and I testify to the goodness of GOD in this regard,

9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 
10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 
11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. ~ 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

A 'mixed-up' Orlando Pirates supporter! Just as we were packing up around a quarter-to-eight, or so, this woman arrived who had escorted some children into the stadium. After taking this photograph she spoke . . . i was so shocked i exclaimed “It’s a man!” to much laughter from some standing nearby. However, this is no laughing matter when one considers the above Scripture that he was dressed as “effeminate” and his ‘outfit’ had all sculls on it! Very sad and wicked! The things people do for fun! Honestly, I think “he” was two-weeks too early for the Orlando Pirates match . . .

Evangelism at the United vs Park Match, 2016/17

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ~ Acts 4:12

This praise report is solely for GOD’s glory alone and that no attention be directed our-way! “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). On Wednesday 2nd November 2016, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL football match between Maritzburg United and Highlands Park “Lions of the North” that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium. We arrived about 17H45.

A discussion with some spectators After praying in our car, we went and set up and was approached by a young couple who said they are “brother-and-sister-in-Christ” when asked if they were boyfriend and girlfriend. It was also established that they attend a ‘Zion church’. It would appear to be an African Traditional ‘church’. Leaving nothing to chance, Gary engaged them with the Ten Commandments and established that whilst this couple said they do not participate in ancestral prayers and worship, there are those in their ‘church’ who do exactly that.

We asked them if proper Church discipline is undertaken by their ‘church’, and if so, the Pastor needs to discipline the ancestral worshipping perpetrators and put them out of their ‘church’. The congregation must not be mixed up with the Holy and the profane,

14  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15  And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? ~ 2 Corinthians 6:14,15

We also opened GOD’s Word showing them in Deuteronomy that believers are not to consult the dead in necromancy,

10  There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11  Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ~ Deuteronomy 18:10,11

5  For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; ~ 1 Timothy 2:5

Proclaiming our Lord Jesus Christ Ancestral prayers and worship is a vile abomination against the Creator YEHOVAH. It is a scourge in and amongst the African Traditional ‘churches’ and also a wicked evil that has crept into ‘so-called protestant churches’, too. This evil must be repented of toward GOD – penduka.

When the couple left us to enter the stadium, we continued our ministry outreach. There was not a huge crowd for this football match, but still many, many Gospel tracts went out. We were also encouraged to be thanked for our Jono handing out Gospel tractsproclaiming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We were also given a free complimentary ticket by an Indian spectator who was entering the stadium to attend the game. So we decided to buy another ticket to watch the match, as Jono had never attended a live football match before. It was an ‘eye-opener’ to see what takes place in a soccer-temple!

Evangelism at the United vs Arrows Match, 2016/17

13  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
~ Matthew 7:13,14

This praise report is solely for GOD’s glory alone and that no attention be directed our-way! “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). On Friday 28th October 2016, Jono and Gary attended at the PSL “KZN-Derby” football match between Maritzburg United and Lamontville Golden Arrows that took place at the Harry Gwala Stadium. We arrived just on 17H30.

Rain will not keep the "die-hard" supporter from attending the game A little rain was not going to dampen the going out and preaching the Gospel of our great GOD and Saviour our Lord Jesus Christ. And neither was the rain going to keep the “die-hard” supporters from attending the game! We are thankful to our GOD YEHOVAH who controls all things for His Own glory.

Whilst wicked men indulge in their iniquity GOD will hold every man accountable for his own actions. GOD does not tempt men, as we read,

13  Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. ~ James 1:13-15

The queues started to grow as it rained This evening would be no different. We were told by wicked men who were drunk with alcohol that they know ‘Jesus’. These men were confronted to their faces that they do not know the true Jesus of the Bible and are therefore not filled by the Spirit of GOD, but filled by the spirits of alcohol! GOD’s Word tells us that drunkards will not inherit the Kingdom of GOD, for it is written,

9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ~ 1 Corinthians 6:9,10

The "die-hard" supporters filed past the preaching atop the box Unless drunkards repent of and forsake their abominable sin of drunkenness those drunkards are headed for Hell! An inebriated man entering through the turnstiles even turned back to argue that we are the “illuminaty” because he was confronted with his sin by the Truth of GOD’s Word by the power of the Holy Spirit. The following Scriptures explain this sinful man who is wise in his own conceit, as we read,

20  Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
21  Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
22  Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: ~ Isaiah 5:20-22

Hearing the Law and the Gospel of Grace This drunkard being “wise in his own eyes and prudent in his own sight” also tried to “educate” the evangelists and those spectators within earshot with the question: “Who wrote the Bible?” He then slurring and abrasively answered his own question: “King James wrote the Bible!” This man opened his mouth and showed the world the fool that he is!

Much Scripture portions in Gospel pamphlets and booklets were handed out and much more preaching to small groups of youth hanging around for “freebie tickets” were confronted with the Truth! From some who mocked and scorned the preaching, their mouths were stopped, or they left their friends to continue hearing The Word! We pray for the souls of men who heard the Way of Salvation and the preaching of the Kingdom of GOD!

We also thank GOD for Jono sharing the Gospel in isiZulu after he had walked the various queues handing out many, many Gospel tracts . . .

Kindly keep all in prayer praying to the One and Only true and living GOD for the salvation of souls. We read,
