Why We Do What We Do … To Reach The Lost

This is a testimony of why we do what we do by going out onto the streets to evangelise the lost in obedience to our Lord and our God’s commandment to Go into all the world and preach to every creature (see Mark 16:15).

The past three Sunday afternoons Mark McDonogh, his son Paul and I have been part of training up Saints at the Hayfields Baptist Church in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Yesterday was the practical – where the road meets the soles of our feet – as we went to our local fishing stream in Church Street. The area is very cosmopolitan and darkness prevails but there is light that shines here… the streets are streaming with locals and foreigners, different tribes and tongues, believers and unbelievers, the saved in Christ and the lost souls, many false religions and faiths, people plying their trades on the streets and a bustling flea-market in a court’s gardens, street vendors and in the vicinity there are fortune-tellers and doctors (sic) who profess to be able to cure one of many things (sorcery).

The three of us were joined by three other saints who took to the streets – and we also do pray for the brothers and sisters who were unavailable and who did not join us that they will come out on another day – as we took the Gospel of Truth to the world. Many conversations were had as we encouraged the “newbies” to witness with the hordes of people. Divine appointments do happen as can be seen by brother Paul witnessing to a man by the name of Thobani.

Brother Paul witnessing to Thobani

This Lord’s Day i received a text message from Paul that reads as follows (it has not been altered to show the sincerity of the message and not the spelling):

Hi, this is a text from Thobani i received last night after i spoke to him yesterday…

I just did what you’ve told me, i prayed, i told God every wrong things i’ve done and i asked him to set me free. THANK YOU. I REALY APPRICIETED YOUR LOYALTY.

Praise God! We truly can rejoice that God is working in the hearts of man. The Scripture that comes to mind is what our Lord Jesus said,

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. ~ John 8:36

The Jesus of the Holy Bible is the ONLY ONE who can set you free of your bondage to sin. No other name is given under heaven by which a man must be saved:

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ~ Acts 4:12

Same gent last week reading the “Giant Money” Gospel Tract

Another testimony is what also happened yesterday in the late afternoon after we had gone home. During the week my wife Tammy had received an invitation to a birthday party from an Indian friend named Sandra whose granddaughter Tiara was turning one year of age. It was an opportunity to also share the Gospel as I had prayed for the Lord to open a door. Apparently during the week Sandra had asked Tammy to tell me that the mother of the child Rosanne had asked whether I would open the celebration in prayer. I had questioned my wife as to whether the family was Christian and she had said they were, however I had voiced my concern that if there were other faiths there we would all not be praying to the same God – some would be praying to a false god. Earlier when I had told Mark that I was going to an Indian birthday party he had said to me, smilingly: “I wonder why you are going?” pointing to the fact that God was orchestrating this invitation.

At the small reception of about 32 -35 persons, I had asked to speak to the host David and hostess Rosanne privately to confirm whether they did want me to open in prayer. It was then that I asked them if they were born again Christians and that I had noticed that some of their guests were of the Hindu faith (the red cotton wrist bands) and thus before praying I would like to open with the presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Both agreed that it would be in order – we do know why!!! And so when David welcomed all to the birthday party, he then handed over the proceedings to me. I had earlier fetched my Bible from the car and the Scriptures that I found myself being drawn to be Acts 17. Now, to put this in perspective, just the night before I had been reading the “On the Box Blog” and a posting by Chad Williams titled Is God Needy? Although I would not be addressing atheists – or agnostics for that is what a professing atheist really is – I would be addressing persons who worship false gods in idolatry. The Holy Scriptures I read were Acts 17 from verse 16 through 33, as follows:

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.
18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?
20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25 Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.
33 So Paul departed from among them. ~ Acts 17:16-33

After the reading of the Word, I advised them that whilst all were present to celebrate a child’s birthday, the most important issue at hand would be what would happen to you if you should die… where are you headed after you die: Heaven? or Hell? I then proceeded through part of the Ten Commandments, opening the Law to those present and showing them that if they have violated any of God’s Moral Law as liars, thieves, adulterers, fornicators, murderers, and idolaters then they would be guilty on the Day of Judgment when God will judge in Righteousness as I had just read from the Scriptures. The bad news is that all found guilty of living rebellious lives before a Holy and Just God will receive justice and be sent to hell for eternity because they have sinned against Him. It was then that I shared the Good News that God in His mercy towards humanity revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ and came to this world to suffer and die upon a cross taking upon Himself the sins of the world and dying in our place – you and I should be crucified and be thrown into hell as criminals against God – but Christ died in our place, that He died and was placed in a tomb and on the third day was raised to life forever defeating death, the grave and sin, and one day He will return to judge this world in Righteousness. What is now required of all who is present is that you confess you sins to God, repent of and forsake your sins and put your belief and trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour and He can grant you the free gift of eternal life through His grace to you. You cannot do anything to save yourself. I then told the audience that I have Gospel tracts available for them to read (“Discover 4 Simple Laws” by Living Waters and “The Way to God” by W.M. Press – open this link for Booklets in many languages). There was a pastor named Des also present, who I then asked to pray and bless the time in Jesus’ name and he and I stood in agreement.

After supper – the hosts made a mouth-watering delicious mutton biryani and rice and another chicken curry dish – I distributed the reading material and all happily received the same and when it was time to leave a Hindu lady openly thanked me and said, “Thank you for the Word.”

Praise God that His Word went forth and we trust that He will draw them that will receive Salvation. For salvation is of the Lord:

8 Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah. ~ Psalm 3:8
