The Last Outpost Preaching

Peter and BrettWhilst out in town preaching the Gospel of Yeshua Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ, on Friday April 4, 2014, as I was packing up I was approached by two men visiting from England – Peter Gray-Read a natural Brit and Pastor Brett Crosson who is from Eastwood in Pietermaritzburg and has been resident in the UK for six years. The reason this posting is titled “The Last Outpost” is that Natal was for many years the province in which many English-speaking South Africans lived, and this reference is from the days during the Anglo-Boer war when the English soldiers occupied Natal. It was for a time affectionately known by English-speaking Natalians as “The Last British Outpost”!

Richard and PeterPeter, Brett and Richard had come to South Africa for ministry / mission work, and it was Peter’s prayer that he would meet up with ‘someone’ who would be out on the streets preaching the Gospel and doing Gospel Tract distribution. Well our Father was gracious in granting his heart’s desire and for a greater part of the remaining week of his stay in South Africa, Brother Peter and I – and on one occasion another British Brother named Richard – preached the Gospel ofRichard and Peter Yeshua extensively. We preached in Pietermaritzburg at the Mahatma Ghandi statue, in upper Church Street outside the Home Affairs’ offices to huge lines of people which had a young Jewess in line that heard the Good News of the Messiah, outside the Main Library and the main taxi rank at Peter and Gary outside PMB Library witnessingFreedom Square. We also went and witnessed to three street hawkers selling their crafts and a security guard at the Howick Falls. Later a whole group of elderly Indian folk on a day out also heard the preaching of Christ Jesus as they came to view the falls and also a young Muslim man who had heard me, and was spoken to initially by Peter, was receptive to the Gospel – even confirming that he has Christian friends and he also reads the Bible. We encouraged him to pursue his reading on a deeper level.

Church of the VowWe also took in some sights at the Voortrekker Museum with some history lessons and an EnglishChurch of the Vow translation of the Afrikaans Vow made to God at the Battle of Blood River on December 16, 1838 as we visited the Voortrekker Church built in honour to God’s deliverance!

Gary at Durban BeachOn Saturday April 12, Peter and I also preached down on the Durban beachfront outside ‘Joe Kools’ and up at the skateboard park. We were also joined by an ex-prisoner who now serves our Lord named David who had set out from Bloemfontein and found himself in Durban. He spent the day with us handingPeter preaching outside Joe Kools out Gospel literature along the beachfront. The day was a real blessing which ended off with some hard preaching / witnessing and rebuking of some Muslim anti-christ mockers of Yeshua at a beach-facing restaurant. The day was a full day as we only arrived back in Pietermaritzburg after 8pm.

Peter ministering and praying with JohannesThen on Monday April 14, the day Peter was to catch his flight back to England via Dubai, we had one last ministry outreach at the Richmond Home Affairs’ office in the KZN Midlands as I had to make an application for an unabridged birth certificate there. There was some sweet fellowship and ministry work as Peter ministered and prayed with an African security guard named Johannes.

During our time together it was a blessing from God our Father with many tracts been distributed, conversations and prayers undertaken and many, many people heard the Gospel preached with passion to this dying world. We give all praise to YHVH for His mercy and much grace that was given to us.

After the British Brethren had departed, it was back to solo evangelising.

Rory and Gary

Gary sharing the Law and Gospel of Yahshua with PhilipSaturday April 19 my dear Brother Rory Burns from our fellowship at Living Hope Baptist Church joined me on the streets outside the Capital Centre shopping complex in Pietermaritzburg where we preached and tracted the precinct. Initially the security guards did not want us to preach there – although we were on the public sidewalk – but they relented and said we could give our message for two hours! About twenty or so minutes into Gary preaching upon a box to gathering people as Rory engaged them in conversation we were being told that the shopping centre management wanted us to leave. By the providence of YHVH whilst finishing off, Gary was approached by an American named Philip Caloia who raised some objections and called the preaching of the Gospel “fairytales”! Whilst he was told to step aside, Rory took him aside whilst I wrapped up the preaching. By God’s divine appointment we spent over an hour engaging Philip in a side street with the Gospel and apologetics. He said that in America, evangelists would not give him more than ten minutes and then leave him for lost based on his “fairytale” statements and argumentative questions; and he was commending us – no boasting on our behalf – for our time and effort spending it with him. Here is part of our discussions with Philip.

Unfortunately, two further videos were not saved properly and we cannot show how Philip was being challenged by what we were telling him. In fact the following statement had him perplexed:

You have to be born twice in order to die once, if you should die, to receive eternal life. But you will be born once and die twice in damnation!

Philip said that this statement went straight over his head, but as Gary started reading Revelation 20:11-15 the fourteen years in which Philip “was” – or rather thought he was a Christian, he “got it”! Whilst he does not believe Hell exists the statement of two deaths had him “lost” for a time! It shows the Power of God’s Word. At this point he needed to get to his rented car as he was to travel to Ladysmith and we volunteered to drop him off where he had parked the vehicle. By his insistence he wrote his email address down for Gary as he wishes to continue the conversation. Gary has already sent him an email and will await his return to the USA in the month or so ahead. Keep praying for Philip, for this might be an answer to his mostly Christian family praying for him. What are the chances that an “ex-christian” (a clear contradiction of terms) who was born in Brooklyn, NYC in 1954, who now lives in Florida, Miami travels halfway around the world from the USA and finds himself in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa where he meets two evangelists, and hears the Good News of a Resurrected Saviour who can save a wretched, mocking sinner? Philip has seen that Rory and Gary are the result of a gracious God! We do pray and hope he too will come to true faith in our Saviour Yeshua Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ! Please keep all in prayer for their salvation.

Soli Deo Gloria!

  1. Greater is the name of the Lord. mmh I love that. Greater is He. praise God!!

  2. Eish I watched that video. Gods people are lost and if they know they would have repented now because truly there is no redemption beyond the death. And it very challenging to preach the gospel to someone who is misled,

It is not easy to brainwash false doctrines entrenched to the minds of the people of God. thats a great job my brothers. I will always put you in my prayers at midmight and early in the morning. May God bless you.
