Side Two ~
Now that you have answered the questions on the reverse side of this handout ~ how did you score? 25%? 50%? 100%? We tend to know a lot about our sport and other things, but spend little to no time thinking about the million dollar question that I will put to you now. This question will make every other question you have ever answered appear to be insignificant. Do you know what will happen to you the day you will die and pass into eternity? People tend to think about everything else including attending a mountain bike event than thinking about their eternal destiny. Reality is 150 000 people die every 24 hours and you know that you are guaranteed one thing in this life ~ someday you will also die. If you should die this day, do you think you will be good enough to stand before a Holy God and go to Heaven. If I should ask you if you are a good person, most persons will profess to be good. But, by what standard are you basing your goodness on? Your own standard? To truly see whether you are a good person you should use a more perfect standard to judge yourself by looking into the perfect moral Law of Almighty God. This Law is known as the Ten Commandments. How many lies have you told in your life? Half-truths, fibs, white lies … it doesn’t matter what you call the lie, by definition God sees you as a liar. Stolen something? It doesn’t matter the size or value of the object, time does not excuse this crime. God sees you as a thief. Jesus said in old times it was said do not commit adultery, but I tell you whoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:28). Ever looked with lust? Had sexual thoughts in your mind? Indulged in fornication (had sex outside the bounds of marriage)? Then God sees you as an adulterer. Ever committed murder? The Bible says hating someone is murder (1 John 3:15). This also includes abortion which is the murder of unborn children. Ever used God or His Son Jesus’ name to show surprise or disgust? Like, “Oh my G-D!!” That is blasphemy and it is a serious offense in the sight of God. If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions then God sees you as a liar, a thief, an adulterer, a murderer and a blasphemer and God finds you guilty and will judge you for every crime you have committed against Him. He sees every thought, intention of the heart, every word uttered and every deed done, even those in secret. If God gives you the justice you rightfully deserve on the Day of Judgment as a lawbreaker then will you go to Heaven or Hell? Any person in their right mind will know that breaking the Law demands a payment and God has assigned a place called Hell as His prison for sinners who have transgressed against Him. That is the bad news. The Good News is that God is so kind and merciful that He expressed His grace and love to sinners by choosing to reveal Himself in the person of His Son Jesus Christ. Fully God and fully Man and without sin, Jesus gave us the divine standard by which we are to live and then He went to the cross to be punished by the full wrath of God to pay the price and take the full punishment for the repentant sinner who will hear the Gospel and believe. Not just believe but to put your full trust in Jesus Christ for mercifully dying in the place of you the sinner. You cannot buy your way into Heaven. Your righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) in the sight of a Holy God. You are not good. God is so Good to want to save evil and wicked sinners from eternal damnation. Repent before God’s throne while you still have time.

MTB World Cup 2009 ~ Day I

Friday 10th April 2009

Today would be the first of three days that I would be out at the MTB World Cup being staged in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. This colonial city is nicknamed “Sleepy Hollow” and has become known as the “City of Choice” which now houses the local provincial legislature of KwaZulu-Natal.

Jonathan and I met at Cascades Shopping Centre around 07H00 and prepared to take up our positions to hand out a gospel tract especially designed for this event with a quiz dealing with mountain bike trivia on the front page and the Law and the Gospel of Grace on the reverse page. Jonathan went to the entrance leading from the Cascades’ parking lot and I took up my position at the main entrance leading from an adjacent car park where the competitors, event staff, course marshals, organizers and the media parked their vehicles outside the main ticket office. The reason is I would be here for three days, as the Lord willed.

God is gracious in how He wants things done and the door He opens remains open. While I was waiting at the entrance, the main coordinator named Alec saw me standing with a hand full of the 3000 printed tracts (thanks to my wife Tammy for helping with the printing of the same) we hoped to hand out over the course of the three days. He asked me what I was going to hand out and without hesitation I replied “Gospel tracts.” He was silent for a brief moment and then recollected a conversation he had with his mother about this event taking place on the Easter weekend and that he would not be able to attend church service. This story was broadcast aloud while staff, security and marshals milled around waiting to be taken to their positions for the day. God allowed him to give me the go-ahead to take up my position at the main entrance outside the main ticket office as I introduced myself to the main security officer Craig and his gate attendees Andile and Carmenie (a Hindu). I tried to witness to both gate attendees but it would appear that at the time they were not open to the Word and they were busy working. God is the only Judge of their hearts.

When the volunteers and paid marshals came through the gate I handed them tracts and some of them read it immediately and a few dropped them. I will relate to this incident a little later.

This being a qualification day there was a steady flow of spectators coming through the gate and as each person came through I greeted them and told them to have a nice day as I handed them a tract. There were not many who refused the tracts – some asked what it was and I told them that it asks questions about this (MTB) event and on the reverse side is a presentation of a more important event that took place about 2000 years ago. At other times I just referred to the handout being a gospel tract. Mostly took without asking questions, some refused and handed it back with a comment, but this allowed me to speak openly in ear shot that they will have to stand before God someday and will they be found good enough to enter into heaven.

Even though I did not stand up and preach a sermon by proclaiming the Law and the Gospel of Grace, I received a heckler – an American woman competitor whose name and photo I did not get. She rode past and pointed to the few tracts lying on the ground that the marshals dropped – surprisingly I did not see a spectator drop a tract that I was aware of, there was none lying about – but here this woman pointed to the tracts and told me to pick them up and that the people do not want them. She also alluded to that I was sinning by polluting the place with my tracts. My response to her was that if people reject the gospel it is not my sin but their own sin and that they should know better than to pollute. I had not handed her a tract so she must have been told about it or read it somewhere within the bounds of the event. However she came to know about the gospel literature I sensed she did not like the message. Was she being convicted? Only God knows why she heckled me. This took place early in the morning before the day’s proceedings were well under way. A short while later the main coordinator happened along and picked up the three or four tracts that lay about. Nothing was said.

From that point on it was awesome and humbling serving the Lord at the gate even helping the gate attendees with tickets and directing spectators to the downhill shuttle. At every opportunity someone received a tract and when the opportunity presented itself I spoke about the things of God. I even had an opportunity to speak to a member of MTB South Africa (name not known) who “boastfully” answered the trivia questions all right, but when I started to take him through the good person test he didn’t want to admit he is a liar. He kept telling me he is not a liar and God is love and he does not agree with me. The conversation was short and a seed was planted.

During the course of the day Jonathan laboured in the Lord’s vineyard and even at one point “they” closed his entrance to spectators to send them to the main ticket office entrance so tracts could be given out. This was no coincidence. This was God at work. We were also blessed to have our brothers and sisters in Christ join us for a while to encourage us and hand out some tracts.

Thanks to Reghardt, Lynette and baby Leonard, Dale and Amanda (above picture), and Paul who has recently returned from England. Mark McDonogh is his dad and I know he was praying for us. You all are a blessing.

What I learned from the first day and marveled at the work of the Lord was when I recollected the events of that day and shared them with my family, when I returned home at about 16H00, God is faithful as He leads. We must allow God’s will to be done. Don’t try doing anything in your own strength. I was on my feet for nine hours straight and God kept me upright in overcast humid heat, He fed me spiritually (I did not eat anything until I arrived home;  I only had some juice I took along) and if I wanted to get up and preach to the crowds security could have tried to shut me down. At the end of the day I served the Lord by faithfully getting more tracts into peoples’ hands than I have done before on any day. At the day’s end almost a thousand tracts were handed out.

I would thank the Lord Jesus for glorifying Himself while we laboured not in vain. An early night to prepare for tomorrow.

MTB World Cup 2009 ~ Day II

Saturday 11th April 2009

Day two and the crowds picked up as the events for the day would be the following:

• World Cup Olympic Cross-country – Men Juniors
• World Cup Olympic Cross-country – Women Juniors
• World Cup Olympic Cross-country – Women Elite
• World Cup Olympic Cross-country – Men Elite
• World Cup 4X – Finals

The left over tracts from the day before together with a thousand more was what I was armed with this day at the main entrance outside the main ticket office. The Lord kept me while I served Him, by helping the staff at the gate and getting tracts into peoples’ hands. What was so encouraging was that although some people when offered a tract responded with a quick “No, I received one yesterday, thank you” it allowed me to quickly direct a question to them whether they had read both sides. Some had; some had not. It also allowed short dialogue within earshot of others as I implored them to please read both sides and see how they will have to stand before a Holy God. What was also encouraging was that some Christians thanked me for handing out tracts and they had read both sides. It is all glory to God that the Word was being shared.

What I also thank the Lord for is that some friends of mine who are still in the world who I have not been in contact with since I became a child of God passed by me and I had the opportunity to get a tract into their hands. This was a blessing and I pray that they will read the tracts and if they visit this blog they will post a comment. I pray God will extend mercy to them and cause them to repent of their sin and trust in His Son the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

This day I was again heckled by the “unknown woman from day one” when she challenged me that I do not have permission from UCI to hand out my “religious material”. I kindly responded to her: “Who should I listen to – man or God?” She continued with her “Nobody wants your religious material” retort. To the woman heckler: If you view this at anytime, I am not angry at you for your comments, but I do hope you would enter into a proper dialogue and not heckle from a distance. The proof is by the end of day two; just short of two thousand tracts had been handed out. God is in control and He decides who accepts and who rejects the Gospel – O Father, thank you for allowing so many tracts to go forth, taking Your Word to those You have called.

It was yet another fruitful day for God’s glory and I thank our Lord Jesus for allowing me to be of service to Him. I was truly blessed to receive a text message today that read:

Proverbs 11:30 “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.”

God bless

I share this not to get praise for myself. I am nothing without Jesus. It is all the glory for God and His Son Jesus. It is a blessing to have brothers and sisters thinking about and praying for you and that this is truly a family affair, not a solo effort.

For me, this day came to a close about 16H30.

MTB World Cup 2009 ~ Day III

Sunday 12th April 2009

I awoke and after prayer and reading the Bible I went in a little later at 08H00 as there would be the following main events in the afternoon:

 • Women’s World Cup Downhill – Finals

 • Men’s World Cup Downhill – Finals

Today would be busy. Armed again with the remnant tracts from day two and a further thousand tracts I resumed the position at the main entrance. The crowds came and there were many repeat visitors who said they had already received tracts, but the Lord also brought new spectators that readily took the gospel message. There were even more compliments and encouragement from spectators and there were also those that did not want the tracts again, or refused to take it anew when told it was a gospel tract. Even as late as into the third day, the main coordinator Alec (from day one) came and asked me for a tract. Here he is in the red shirt walking to the main arena at the finish line. Back at the entrance the spectators kept arriving… And they continued to come in… Until they closed the ticket office as the men’s final was well underway. For the first time I decided to go in to see how many spectators there were and this is part of the crowd – just at the finish line to the downhill course, not including those out on the course… I did not stay for the whole final and did not see the local rider Greg Minnaar win, but I do hope a gospel tract found its way into his hands. I went out and found my van was parked in that I could not leave. This allowed me time to place tracts under the windscreen wipers on the vehicles in the parking area. I then returned to my vehicle where I was approached by Lovemore, a Zimbabwean who was selling his curio ware at the entrance to the car park. He approached me and asked me what I had. Before long, it allowed me time to proclaim the Law and the Gospel of Grace to him for which he was thankful. Please join me in prayer for Lovemore and the people that received tracts and heard the Law and the Gospel of Grace. Even if one person is redeemed, the host before the throne of our Heavenly Father will rejoice.

This was truly a most awesome weekend of time well spent in God’s vineyard, in His harvest field. To cap it all off I received a telephone call from a lady thanking me for putting the tract together, blessing me. This work is not for my praise. Everything was for God’s glory and that His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ will have His name exalted and He will receive praise and worship as He rightfully deserves.

For the record – especially for my “unknown woman heckler” – of the 3000 tracts printed I have only about 100 left which were not handed out. The rest will be handed out on the streets. God is Sovereign, Holy and Awesome.
